Video- RCDon - Don Giandomenico - N6YIY

I love Piper Cubs.

Well I was cruising around the net the other day and found RCDon's site (N6YIY). (See my previous post on his Hints and Tips page.) He has some awesome videos on his Hanger 9 100” Super Cub ARF, I believe this model is discontinued.... Anyway

Here is Don's page to his video Cub

Don also has a page that details how he did it. The equipment involved and the process of deciding on what equipment would work best for his application.

Here is a small snippet of the information on how Don made it all come together.

I started researching what systems were available and the range they offered. There were some projects that utilize a consumer grade security camera made by X-10 (X10.com ) that transmits on 2.4 gigahertz. This system did not appeal to me because the range was limited to 100 yards or so and the frequency used does not work well around obstructions....

Finally After looking around some more I found a Transmitter on the web that was reasonable in price, lightweight, and powerful enough for range. The AVX-900 T4 was my final choice for this project. This unit transmits on the efficient 900 MHz band and did not interfere with the 72 MHz remote control receiver. Unlike the popular 2.4 GHz Band, which has a lot of traffic and needs line of sight to work efficiently, the 900 MHz band is better suited for long range applications being a lower frequency.

A group of here in our local club is very interested in getting digital pix as well as video from our planes in flight as well as ground objects. Don's site is going to be a big help

Hints and Tips from RCDon

RC Don

Found a really cool site with a special section for hints and tips. It is maintained by Don Giandomenico, who also happens to be an Amateur Radio Op! N6YIY Cool!

Don has lots of good information covering the following:

  • Engine care and maintenance

  • Fuel transportation

  • Aircraft transportation

  • Battery care/use

    • Lipos

    • Chargers

    • Safety Equipment

  • Tool tips

  • Material tips

Here is just a sample of what Don has to offer:

Building room dust collector

If you have a building room at home, you probably know about the dust problem that is created when you work on your models. I had battled balsa dust all over my house and really needed a solution. I wanted to install a dust collection system that would be quiet and efficient. Most commercial dust collectors I found took up too much space and created a lot of noise. The price was not attractive either so I looked at a vacuum system as an alternative.
The inherent problem with a vacuum is that they are not designed for prolonged use. The high current, high RPM motor of a vacuum is great for intermittent use but falls short on continual use. The filter on a shop vac will also clog up quickly with balsa dust. After considering what I wanted, I went back to researching the commercial dust collector. After looking around on the net I found a 1 HP portable dust collector from Harbor Freight for about $100.

And for Don's main page please see this page. Check it out he has done quite a bit in RC.

Video- Mr Bill Hempel

Mr. Bill Hempel.

One of my RC buddies passed along an absolutely awesome video of this pilot who saved a plane that had 1 wing totally depart the aircraft!!! I always thought that, you can loose a prop, still glide, I have heard you can lose an engine and still glide, somewhat, but loosing a wing, your dead. Well Bill shows us all that is not true.

Here is the video of him saving his aircraft. What a masterful piece of flying. Someday I hope to be 1/10 as good. WOW!

There are lost more info on Bill's site. Was really neat to find he is a UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) pilot in Arizona. That must be a really cool job!

Great Planes Yak 55 3D FlightFlex EP ARF Part 6

Test Flight.

Well it flew, a long awaited for event!
I seemed a tad tail heavy so we used a Thunderpower 2100 3 cell

That seemed to help a bit. It sure did give it POWER! Straight up we goooooooo!!!
Anyway Alan, my flying brother, gave it a good work thru. He said the performance was ok. It was a bit mushy on the controls. The tail "wagged". When I took it out to the local field on West Field Wednesdays, John a SMWB member dubbed it the "Nerf Yak". YAH! that's a good one!

I flew it around the patch a couple of times and Ross one of the local expert/test pilots got a few rounds in.

I've had it out at my brother's house in Liberty, Mo and it just was acting very strange. Proceeded to crash about 3 times and then I gave up. It got a lot of ground rash as you can see by the pix. Lots of dents and holes. It is a real bummer..

I then had it out at the local soccer fields and gave it another try. Alan again took it thru some maneuvers and then I got on the sticks and proceeded to dump it into the ground due to being too low. My bad. It would not respond, Alan said I probably had it in a stall.

The elevator had received some damage and I thought I had taken care to not apply glue to any parts that would restrict its movement. But, I guess I did, maybe when I used the kicker and it flowed into the hinge/carbon dowl area. Well only one side would operate. What a bummer!! Someone suggested taking that mechanism off and hinging it to give a more full swing in its movement. I might try that... Just have to give it a breather for a moment..

I know the video on the Great Planes site shows them flying it very well in a warehouse. Mine is just not responding that way. Ross says keep trying. Alan says it is a novelty and I am leaning toward retiring it.. I just have to do some thinking.

Here is the site to buy it at Tower Hobbies

Here is a video of the Yak 55 flying pretty nicely.

In the end I am most likely going to gut the components and since it is such a bright airplane I most likely will be hanging it up in my sons room. He will enjoy it and keep the RC flying bug alive!

If the decision is to let it live on I will post some updates here but for now this will most likely wrap up this thread.

Thanks for reading...
